An annual wellness eye exam is an important part of our general health care. Think of the yearly wellness exams as an equivalent to your yearly physical. A wellness exam determines your need for vision correction but also screens for undiagnosed systemic and eye problems that may lead to future health problems. During an eye exam, we offer a variety of tests and procedures to make sure your eyes are in good health. These tests range from simple ones, like having you read an eye chart, to complex tests, such as using advanced technology to image the eyes. At every wellness eye exam, screenings are performed for common eye problems such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, retinal detachment, corneal abnormalities, eye misalignment, focusing inabilities, or dry eyes. Many eye problems are best managed with early detection before there is functional loss of vision.

At Desert Eye Associates, we offer both yearly wellness exams and medical eye care to patients of all age.

Your wellness exam will often include:

  • Vision testing and recommendations for correction using glasses or contacts
  • Slit lamp examination
  • Dilation
  • Tonometry
  • Special tests depend on the findings from the above and can include
    • Visual field
    • Ultrasound
    • Ocular Coherence tomography
    • Photos

Systemic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, rheumatoid arthritis, rosacea, and even brain tumors can manifest in the eye. That is why it is important to have a yearly eye exam even if you are not experiencing any vision issues.
