The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a pressing warning to consumers about the potential dangers of 26 over-the-counter (OTC) eye drop products. These products may carry a risk of causing eye infections that could lead to serious outcomes such as partial or complete vision loss.
BRANDS INVOLVED IN THE RECALL:
- CVS Health
- Leader (Cardinal Health)
- Rugby (Cardinal Health)
- Rite Aid
- Target Up&Up
- Velocity Pharma
These products, intended to be sterile, bypass some of the body’s natural defenses when applied to the eyes, thus increasing the potential harm.
The FDA’s decision came after their investigators discovered insanitary conditions at the manufacturing facility. Further, environmental samples from critical drug production areas tested positive for bacteria. On October 25, 2023, the FDA recommended the recall of all affected lots.
Major retailers like CVS, Rite Aid, and Target have begun the process of removing these products from their stores and online platforms. However, products under the Leader, Rugby, and Velocity brands may still be available for purchase both in stores and online. Consumers are urged to avoid buying them.
As of now, the FDA hasn’t received any reports of eye infections due to these products. However, they encourage both health care professionals and patients to report any adverse events or issues with any medication through the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program.

Leader (Cardinal Health): Several Dry Eye Relief and Lubricant Eye Drops, and Eye Irritation Relief.
Rite Aid: Multiple Lubricant Eye Drops and Gels, including Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium and Propylene Glycol-based products.
Target Up&Up: Dry Eye Relief Lubricant Eye Drops and Extreme Relief Dry Eye products.
